Avascular necrosis is one of the major reasons for total hip replacement surgery based on statistical data also known also as hip osteonecrosis. In America alone, about 20,000 cases are reported every year. 10% of hip surgeries are performed in the country only due to Avascular necrosis. Great Bo Jackson is perhaps the most famous person affected with this disease who subsequently achieved success after the hip replacement surgery.
Avascular necrosis is caused when blood flow to the hip bone decreases which leads to the death of the bone tissue particularly due to starvation. While this abnormalty may be available in other parts of the body, the hips are usually the most affected parts. Young and middle-aged adults are the mostly affected group with this disorder.
There are various factors which causes this condition. A survey held in Japan showed that 34.7% was due to the use of corticosteroid, 21.8% to alcohol abuse, and 37.1 percent due to other reasons which may include hip fracture or dislocation, blockage in blood vessels from sickle cell anemia or fat deposition, inflammation of the arteries, blood clots and other disorders which restrict the blood flow to the bones.
Patient shows no symptoms in the early stages. As the condition worsens, it becomes painful particularly when pressure is put on the affected area. As the disease progresses, the hip pain may become more severe and constant. If the condition grows more worse then it may further result in the collapse of the bones and the surrounding joints which may then cause severe and chronic pains and may widely affect movement of the affected joints. The time when the first symptom appears to the collapse of the bones and joints may vary from a number of months to more than a year.
The treatment for avascular necrosis includes improvement of the function of affected joint, stop the rate of the bone damage, and reduction of pain. Various factors taken into account while treating this condition are the age of the patient, severity of the condition, affected area and the root cause.
For instance, if the disease is due to blood clots, the doctor may give medicines for dissolving the clots. If the disease is due to the inflammation of the arteries, anti-inflammatory medicines may be prescribed. Other types of treatment are conservative measures such as weight reduction, physiotherapy and behavioral changes. Patients may also be advised to walk with the help of support such as canes and crutche.
Though these procedures may slow the progress of the disease or reduc the pain, records reveal that majority of the patients may have to undergo the surgery. There are a number of surgical options available such as osteotomy, bone graft, total hip replacement and core decompression. decompression, and total surgery.
